The Compassionate Neighbourhood Initiative
  

Compassionate Neighbourhoods on Quadra Island is building caring, connected communities where neighbours know, support, and look out for one another through kindness, inclusion, and meaningful relationships.

Our vision is to help shift from an increasingly isolated way of living toward a village-like community where people feel they belong, share responsibility for one another's well-being, and where compassion and neighbourliness become part of everyday life. We believe lasting change begins with small acts of connection, friendship, and care.

By fostering neighbour-to-neighbour relationships through friendship, practical assistance, community engagement, education, and connections to local resources, we strengthen the social fabric of our island. Rather than simply responding to immediate needs, we strive to inspire, model, and support sustainable ways of building a compassionate community where everyone feels valued, heard, supported, and empowered to contribute.

Each participating neighbourhood is supported by two to three trained volunteer Neighbourhood Connectors, who serve as the primary point of contact for residents. Working closely with a dedicated Compassionate Neighbourhood Coordinator, they help connect neighbours with one another, identify local needs, encourage community participation, and provide support tailored to both individuals and the neighbourhood as a whole.

Neighbourhood Connectors are available to all residents seeking assistance with everyday, non-emergency challenges. Their role is to help reduce isolation, strengthen relationships, connect people with local resources, and ensure that no one is left behind—regardless of age or circumstance.

Through these relationships and opportunities for participation, we are creating neighbourhoods where people thrive, belong, and help build a stronger, more compassionate Quadra Island.

We have launched the program in two neighbourhoods—Quadra Loop/Smith Road and Southend—with plans to expand into additional neighbourhoods throughout the summer of 2026.
